For the perfect Malayalee look – Unniyarcha jewellery for Onam
It’s that time of the year – when Malayalees from all over the world take time off to celebrate Onam. This festival marks several things – from the annual harvest in Kerala to the legends associated with King Mahabali.
Given that it is one of the main festivals of Kerala, dressing up is a significant part of it all, and Onam jewellery is much loved and cherished. Often handed down from generation to generation, some pieces are incredibly traditional and usually come out of hibernation on days such as Onam.
Manga mala, nagapadathali, kaasimala, poothali and elakkathali are all typical Kerala jewellery, but the modern woman of today wants a little something more. While she might appreciate the traditional versions, she might also be looking out for more – at Unniyarcha, we offer modern versions of classic jewellery pieces.
The legend that lies beyond traditional Onam jewellery
For most people, Onam is a harvest festival, where people dress up, enjoy lavish sadyas (meals served on banana leaves) and enjoy festivities. But the people of Kerala will tell you that that is more than just another harvest celebration.
Legend has it that Mahabali, a demon king, was once the ruler of Kerala and was much loved by his people. However, the rapidly growing power and stature, as well as the love he was enjoying from his subjects, became a reason for fear for the gods. They approached Mahavishnu and asked him to intervene.
Taking on the guise of Vamana, Mahavishnu arrived at the royal court and asked Mahabali for help. The generous Mahabali asked what the brahmin wanted, to which Vamana replied, three paces of land.
The moment Mahabali agreed, Vamana took on his cosmic avatar, increasing in size. In his first pace, he covered all of earth, and in his second, the heavens. As he awaited to place his third step, Mahabali humbly bowed down and offered his head, ready to be pushed into the netherworld.
Pleased by Mahabali, Vishnu granted him one wish – Mahabali asked that he be allowed to return to his land, once a year, to be with his subjects.
